Multi-Generational Living
Our clients were looking to downsize from the large family home sitting on acres of land. This couple wanted less home to care for and less ground to maintain, but were not interested in the restriction of senior living developments. The answer was an in-law addition attached to their daughter’s family home. The best of both worlds became theirs: time with grandchildren, a beautiful setting, and less property to care for, allowing more freedom for travel.

- Exterior View After Addition
This family’s objective was to merge the first-generation (parents) with the second-generation (children) and their growing family. Our solution was to add a two-story wing to the side of the daughter’s and son-in-law’s existing home. A detached single-car garage helped to create independent living for mom and dad. They wanted a separate entryway for the addition while retaining communal access from the main house via a shared hallway and laundry room between the two structures. We took advantage of the single-car garage and created access from the in-law apartment’s lower level.

Outdoor Living Space
The husband is an avid gardener and wanted the opportunity to tend the landscaping of their new home. The decision to create a screened porch with a small deck afforded a great outdoor living space with views of the lush landscape. Hardscape was installed, offering an easy walk to the main home from the outdoors and the attached large deck. Both families can share the multiple outdoor living spaces. The new structure was turned at an angle to create this unified concept, an optimal parking space on the front exterior, and a connection to the existing detached garage.

Open Concept Floor Plan
Our client loves being outdoors and is thrilled with their new screened porch, which opens to the main living space via French doors. The in-law addition features an open floor plan for the living, dining, and family rooms, with a beautiful new gas fireplace. The bedroom suite is adjacent to the living room and includes a large walk-in closet and a bathroom with a sizeable walk-in shower.
The Kitchen
According to our client, this kitchen is more beautiful and functional than the one in their much larger home. The island offers plenty of room for meal prep and serving, and allows guests to engage in conversation while the cook prepares for the party! The blue kitchen island complements the single run white cabinets and visually separates the living room from the kitchen. The Revwood plus laminate flooring throughout creates a flow through, bringing in light with the lighter wood finish.
Requests for Multi-Generation Living or Merged Living have risen in the past few years, according to Generations United. “A new study from Generations United, Family Matters: Multigenerational Living Is on the Rise and Here to Stay, finds that the number of Americans living in a multigenerational household with three or more generations has nearly quadrupled over the past decade, with a dramatic increase of 271 percent from 2011 to 2021 (7 percent vs. 26 percent).”
