Interior Design and Remodel
This 1990s home is situated in the historic community of Ellicott City, not far from Main Street. The house is located on a beautiful two-acre treed, very private lot, which was perfect for the owners, but the home needed updating. Our homeowners wanted to create a more functional first floor for their family, which included renovating the family room, kitchen, laundry room, and pantry. Several aesthetically pleasing changes were chosen. Bulkheads were removed, and paint in a neutral color brightened the space. New flooring throughout brought consistency to the first floor.
Kitchen
After removing the original dark cabinetry, white tile flooring, and bulkheads, we introduced faux wood beams to give the space a more rustic look. White cabinetry was chosen in the updated design, creating a more expanded look and feel, though no additional square footage was added. Also for a rich luxurious touch countertops were installed in a concrete finish black soapstone. The purple paint was replaced with a neutral color, and new lighting was added.
Additional cabinetry allowed for better storage options, including five-toe kick drawers. The new kitchen design also created a peninsula, providing extra workspace, storage, and seating. It also created a separation line between the kitchen and dining room.
Great Room
The new faux wood beams installed in both the great room and kitchen add character and warmth without the weight and cost of real wood beams. The rustic look blends in with the historic area making the home look like it was always there. By choosing to install the same natural wood flooring throughout the first floor it brings a continuity and authentic historic feel.
Another design choice was removing an existing wall dividing the kitchen from the dining room. Now, the spaces are combined, creating an open concept and allowing the new peninsula to be installed in the kitchen area. Which separates the spaces without the obtrusiveness of a wall.
Laundry, Pantry, and Powder Room
To finish the design and remodel of this Ellicott City home’s first floor, we added a roomy walk-in pantry, a large laundry room with an entrance to the garage, and a beautiful new powder room. A window in the pantry allows for plenty of natural light making selecting an item a breeze. Even in the laundry area they have natural light which lightens and brightens both new spaces.
